The aim of this course is to introduce candidates to the techniques, skills, equipment and communications whilst at the same time ensuring that persons have the knowledge and skill to take charge of powerboats which are involved in: escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers, canoes & powerboats. Providing safety cover for training fleets, Racing fleets, Water festivals, water activities within local communities on inland and inshore areas. Assisting in race management duties. (Sailing & Powerboat). Operating in areas they are familiar with, during hours of darkness.

Boat 6.5m Excalibur RIB 120hp Mercruiser inboard diesel engine, 5.5 m Humber RIB 90hp Honda four stroke engine, 4m Narwhal RIB 15hp Honda four stroke engine. SailCork's fleet of sailing dinghies, kayaks and Holy Grounder.

Objective You will be capable of helming a powerboat in a safety and support role for a wide range of sailing, kayaking and other activities on or near the water. You will understand search patterns and how to assist other small craft.
Location SailCork's base at East Ferry in Cork Harbour. Can also be held at your own club.
Equipment Included Kayaks, dinghies and other small craft for practicing Safety Boat skills.
What to bring Your personal powerboating gear, suitable for powerboating in all conditions. Clothing suitable to enter the water appropriate to the season (i.e. wetsuit or drysuit). Buoyancy aid or SAR Inshore lifejacket (not automatic lifejacket). Notebook and pen. Whistle. Powerboat and Powerboat Instructor Logbooks.
Meals Bring a packed lunch for day one. Day 2 we usually go to a harbourside tavern for lunch.
Syllabus

Boat preparation, boat handling, race management, rescue of sailing dinghies, windsurfers, canoes, kayaks and kitesurfers, towing, incident management & medical emergencies. Search patterns. Strategies for ensuring safety cover at water based events and water safety at shorebased events near the water. Role and limitations of SAR crew. Personal, crew and casualty safety. Includes endorsements for planing, outdrive, outboard, console control and tiller control.

Pre Course ISA National Powerboat Cert. Recommended to have first aid certificate and VHF Radio SRC
Pre Course Advice Study weather and tide. Study area on relevant charts (Navionics).
