In Ireland we have a fairly unique climate. We are on the edge of Europe and the edge of the Atlantic. Most of our weather comes from the west - the Atlantic. Understand typical Atlantic weather - the way the Atlantic lows come barreling through- the passage of frontal systems. How is a warm front going to affect you at sea? What type of cloud identifies a cold front? How does the warm front affect the sailor? What dangers are involved? We will look at air pressure, temperature, wind direction and speed, cloud types, precipitation and visibility.
How can we use a weather system to best advantage? Where can we source the best synoptic charts?
See where and how to get the best forecasts... and how to understand them.
Here is an example of some of the subject matter we will be covering:

Why did the Costa Concordia sink?
The town of Cobh has been a port of call for ocean liners for over 150 years - now about 60 liners visit Cork Harbour each year- we all love the liners! Everybody in the maritime community was shocked last Friday night with the news of the grounding of the massive Italian cruise liner the Costa Concordia. I spent the weekend trawling the web to try to find out what really happened - this blog is the tragic story of the last voyage of the Costa Concordia on Friday the 13th of January 2012.
