Cruising Almanac 2012  € 39.00

Compiled by The Cruising Association and Imray, it covers Northwest Europe from the Shetlands to Gibraltar and West Ireland to the Baltic. Cruising Guide to Cork & Kerry  €35

Starting at Yougal and finishing at Tralee, just short of the Shannon, Graham Swanson's cruising companion to this beautiful part of Ireland provides background information that is not found in the traditional pilots and almanacs. After three extended cruises in 'Balair' the author has put together a well-planned guide which not only provides the sort of invaluable navigational information that is needed as a companion to Admiralty and Imray charts, but also describes places to visit and explore. Graham Swanson's gentle commentary places and people is a joy to read and conveys the spirit and atmosphere of the remote harbours and anchorage's tucked into the rias of Southwest Ireland. The photography illustrates the text and balances the detailed Imray cartography and sequence of specially commissioned photographs by Patrick Roach. The introduction contains an illustrated section on sea birds and each cruising section is lightened by recipes for traditional dishes of Cork and Kerry.

Why did the Costa Concordia sink?

 The town of Cobh has been a port of call for ocean liners for over 150 years - now about 60 liners visit Cork Harbour each year- we all love the liners!  Everybody in the maritime community was shocked last Friday night with the news of the grounding of the massive Italian cruise liner the Costa Concordia. I spent the weekend trawling the web to try to find out what really happened - this blog is the tragic story of the last voyage of the Costa Concordia on  Friday the 13th of January 2012.
