Teenage Cruiser

Sailing in Ireland is growing in leaps and bounds. Junior courses are available in every club and school the length and breadth of the country- all in dinghy sailing. SailCork is pioneering special cruiser courses for teenagers. The skill of sailing is matched with teamwork required to sail a 36 foot cruiser - the "Holy Grounder".

Courses are run for teenagers from 13 to 16 years of age in crewing skills - culminatiing with the "Competent Crew" qualification. The base for the courses is SailCork's main base at East Ferry Marina. After a briefing in our chartroom where we study the weather forecast, tides and our proposed route we go aboard for a safety briefing. This is followed by coming alongside drill and then we set sail!

Adventures afloat are interspersed with all the skills necessary to sail a cruiser. Personal development is helped with teamwork being a priority as well as fine tuning individual skills. During a day afloat a bond is created and indeed many a lifelong friendship begins this way.

2009 courses are available in July.

Underwater cable Aghada to Cuskinny

One Thursday evening at the very start of February a group of seafarers decended on my local, “The Roaring Donkey”, in Cobh and lashed into copious quantities of gin and tonic. As the conversations began to flow it transpired that they were the crew of the Norwegian vessel, “Elektron”, docked at Cork Dockyard in Rushbrooke. Not just any ordinary ship but a specialist vessel for cable laying – she was here to lay the cable from Aghada Power Station to Cuskinny on the Great Island in Cork Harbour.
