Who are these guys? What was the Admiral’s Cup?

The Admiral's Cup began in the 1950's and was regarded as the world championships of offshore/ocean racing. The event was held in Cowes during the first week in August on a bi-annual basis. Ireland was represented from the late 1960's onwards. The championships used to begin with the Channel race which started in Portsmouth and sailed across to France and back. Then there was a weeks racing from Cowes fighting with the figaries of the Solent. The event culminated with the classic Fastnet Race - from Cowes round the Fastnet Rock off Cape Clear in Co. Cork and then returning to the finish at Plymouth.

Many famous Irish boats were part of the 3 boat Irish team over the years - Moonduster, Big Apple, Irish Mist, Golden Apple, Silver Apple, Regardless, Jameson - and the list goes on. It was a fantastic opportunity for Ireland to compete with the best in the world - and a huge opportunity for young Irish crews. Take a look at the photo - a mix of some of the Irish and Japanese AC crews. If you are not one of the people in the pic and you can identify two or more of the group we have a prize of a book for you! Sadyl the AC is no more but the Commodores Cup seems to have assumed the mantle - and Ireland have been knocking on the door for a few years- hopefully we will get in there and compete again to win!

This blog comes to you from aboard our training boat, the Beneteau 36.7 "Holy Grounder" , in Cork Harbour where I am enjoying Fathers day with crew Jo, Aisling and Eamonn. See you all in Kinsale this week for Sovereign's Cup Regatta!!!!
